Miss Lonely’s Lonesome Scribbles

The wooden door swings open
To a sight of two neatly kept empty beds
While the third one is subjected
To an unkind treatment
As you unceremoniously dump your things on it.
Headphones set,
You put on your favorite song
On a repeat
And croon in soft whispers,
Remebering those times
When you and your roommate
Hummed  in chorus.

You snap open your eyes
To shake yourself out of reverie
And realise that it’s already pitch black outside.
You look forward to a quite dinner
And an early sleep.
But for some strange reason,
You suddenly feel like a born insominiac.
The slightest tinker of noise
Makes your head turn sharply
And make you shiver
At the thought of an invisible soul
Gazing at you with intense vehemence.
The innocent looking spotless walls
Threaten to engulf you within them
And destroy every proof
Of your exsistence forever.

The dimming lightbulb plays tricks
And you are scared that
Your eyes will lure you
Into an endless sleep
And you will never witness
The radiant sun next morning,
Infusing a spirited yet serene life in you.
Absurd thoughts like these
Keep hovering in your mind
Till a look at your wrist watch says
It’s three at night
And you drop down dead
On you unkept bed
With a childlike faith that
You will survive the night.

Intern @ SISO

The distance between Chennai and Bangalore is less than 500 km and yet, I am here in Bangalore for the first time for my internship at SISO which stands Samsung India Software Operations Pvt. Ltd. And I am enjoying every moment spent out here.

The orientation program for the interns was held in the first two days. Apart from the mandatory activities like verification of documents, opening of bank account, numerous sessions on the company, security, work culture etc., we had some team building events like making bridges out of newspaper. Six groups, each consisting of seven interns, brainstormed and toiled for a good half an hour and came out with six unique designs. And the best part of it was that my team won!

I am assigned to work with the Wireless Messaging Group of Wireless Products and Solutions Team. For my project, when I was asked to learn PHP and SQL, I fell back on my strong foundation of C and C++ programming. Even though I haven’t done rigorous coding for the past 3 years, I was able to pick up the nitty gritty of the languages easily. And then there are my mentors, Rahul Sir, Naga Kiran Sir, Chandan Sir and Lakshmi Narayana Sir, who readily help me whenever I get stuck. In less than 2 weeks, SISO has become an integral part of me.

The energy at the workplace is viral. Everyone is focussed and committed to their assigned project. People talk about their work so enthusiastically as if it some exciting cricket match is going on. There is so much to know, learn and appreciate. Last week, Naga Kiran Sir offered me a sweet and asked me to do an impromptu presentation of my work! I also got a chance to attend an office birthday celebration and I realised it was hardly different from a family birthday celebration. Last but not the least, I am totally in love with with food that is served out here, be it breakfast or lunch. The variety of dishes is simply amazing!

I hope life gets more exciting in the coming days at SISO!

Why Aren’t We Strangers?

It takes just a smile
And two kind words
For two strangers
To become friends.
For us, a borrowed pen
And a couple of jokes
Was more than enough.

As the sands of time slipped by,
Laughters were shared
And secrets spilled over the brim.
But one fine day, everything went wrong.
Who was the cause? Who was to blame?
Why did we confide in each other,
Everything that concealed from others?
Why did we expect from each other
Only to hurt and get hurt in return?
Why didn’t we choose to remain
Strange and aloof to each other,
Exchanging pleasantries as a norm?
We fought and made up.
But the strains refused to fade away.

Now we both wear a mask.
Mask of indifference and apathy.
Our conversations are just a formality
For each other’s sake.
We fall silent now and then
And those long silent pauses
Hit like darts
And shatter my mask,
Revealing the turmoil of emotions beneath it.
But you have turned your back
And moved on,
With your mask still intact.
I gather the pieces of my mask back
For I need it again.
And I surrender myself
To a dreadful truth.
Friends for namesake,
We are worse than strangers.

The Intern Poem

I scribbled the following lines which were supposed to describe ‘Sohini Sarkar’ during the Induction Program of my intern at Samsung India Software Operations Pvt. Ltd. Did I do justice to myself?

My name spells music
And my fingers carve for a wooden reek.
Blessed with two ‘vampire’ teeth,
A happy life is all that I seek.
Simple girl, simpler dreams;
I can’t live without music.
Steaming idlis and a cup of coffee
Are my all-time favourites.
Writing snail mails
Is a fatal obsession of mine.
My hair clips are colour-coded with my dress
Come rain or shine.
First time at Bangalore,
Seems like it’s gonna be a lot of fun.
Because I happen to be
The only girl at my intern!

At Home…

When do you finally realise that you are at home?

  1. When you struggle to stay awake throughout your early morning flight but suddenly become wide awake as soon as your flight lands.

  2. When you anxiously look around for your swanky Honda City and realise that your parents have decided to pick you up in your Maruti 800.

  3. When you have the first morsel of Ghar Ki Roti Sabzi and wish that home food could be sent by email.

  4. When you wake up to the shouts of your younger brother saying, “Didi! Didi! Where is she?”

  5. When, after waking you up, your brother stands next to you and compares his height with yours.

  6. When you go out of your house armed with a bucket, towel and soap only to realise that your house has inbuilt bathrooms.

  7. When you notice quite a few changes in your home and ask your Mom to which she replies, “Didn’t I tell you on phone? Oh! I thought I did!”

  8. When you are inundated with requests from your brother to read his course books, write notices, diary entries, poems, do projects etc.

  9. When you go to the local grocery shop and you forget to show the membership card at the cash counter.

  10. When your maid, watchman, liftman, car cleaner etc. ask your Mom, “Aakpi beti waapas aa gayi? Kitne din rahegi? Kitni dubli patli ho gayi hai!”

At home, at heaven…

Homecoming…

When do you finally realise that you are going home?

  1. When you book a cab to come at 3 AM for a 5 25 AM flight and play music in your laptop in full volume since midnight so that you don’t sleep off.

  2. When your friend-cum-fellow passenger turns up with a 10 seater Chevrolet Tavera for two of you and looks as puzzled as you because apparently he booked a 4 seater Tata Indica.

  3. When, all the while, you think that both of you are flying by Jet Airways and on reaching the airport, you realise that your friend-cum-fellow passenger is flying by Indigo.

  4. When you go till the Jet Airways Departure Terminal only to realise that you, too, are flying by Indigo.

  5. When you bump into another friend in the airport looking ruffled and irritated because he and 3 others had to squeeze themselves in a 4 seater Tata Indica which came to pick them up instead of a 10 seater Chevrolet Tavera.

  6. When the view outside your window pane transforms slowly from a dark night into a lilac dawn and finally into a bright morning, filling you with a sense of  contentment which comes only when you are bound for home sweet home.

  7. When you spend the first half of your flight fighting about sharing cab bill, food bills etc. with your friend-cum-fellow passenger and the second half playing Bingo and Cross and Zeros.

  8. When, as soon as your first flight touches down, you bid a hurried goodbye to your friend-cum-fellow passenger and dash across the Arrival Terminal to the Security Check, just because your next flight will take off exactly one hour later.

  9. When you again find yourself at a window seat in your next flight but, unfortunately, you desperately need to pay a visit to the restroom.

  10. When you finally reach your place and you suddenly realise that you are going to get killed by your younger brother because you forgot to get his favourite airplane chicken sandwich.

The perfect homecoming…

Bura Na Mano Aaj Holi Hai!

A dash of zeal, a bucket full of mischief.
A splash of liveliness, a burst of ecstasy.
A handful of colours, oodles of happiness.
A bunch of unrecognizable faces.
A show of special hair streaks.

As soon as you step out
Neat and fresh,
The world around you moves
In a frenzied blur
And before you can even blink,
You are drenched and done!
A moment of daze
and some curt words under the breath,
You run after your culprits,
And become one of them.
Splash around wildly
As no one should be spared
And eagerly wait for
Another spicy and spany!

No matter where you hide,
The hues and dyes will find you,
And so will your wicked friends!
Because Bura na mano
Aaj Holi hai!
